Without special equalisation and recovery equipment conventional AES-3 digital audio signals are limited to a range of 100 metres over twisted-pair cable. This is a bi-directional interface to two ST-fibres and is used in pairs. AES-3 signals may be sent and received between the two interfaces across two ST-fibres up to 2000 metres long, providing digital audio transmission between buildings campus-wide.
FAB-1
The transformer-balanced AES-3 input is equalised for medium length cables of up to 200 metres and modulates an ST-fibre transmitter. Sample rates of 24kHz to 200kHz are supported. A status LED indicates the integrity of the input signal. The receiving fibre signal is recovered and passed to a transformer-balanced AES-3 output. A bi-colour LED indicates the integrity of the received signal, and also warns of low-level fibre input.
The AES-3 input and output are XLR-3F and XLR-3M respectively, both transformer balanced and earth-free. Power is applied through a 2.5mm coaxial connector. Two ST-fibre connections are provided on the front panel, one for the sending fibre, one for the receiving fibre. Fibre: 50 or 62.5 micron types.
AES-3 input: Impedance 110 ohms, minimum level 200mV peak to peak. AES-3 output: Impedance 110 ohms, 3V peak to peak loaded. Power source: 8 - 30V DC, recommended 12-24V, 120mA at 12V. 2.5mm barrel, centre positive. Dimensions: 94 x 52 x 108 (w x h x d) mm. Weight:250g.
