This range of desktop and rackmount embed/de-embed units from Glensound have been designed to de-embed audio channels from an incoming 3G-SDI signal and embed them to Dante audio output. There are no controls on the devices as they're intended for situations whereby only simple and bi-directional audio pass through is required and there is no requirement for a high level of functionality.
Charon 8P is a portable or desktop unit that de-embeds channels 1-8 from an incoming 3G-SDI signal and embeds them to channels 1-8 on a Dante audio network. Likewise, incoming audio on Dante channels 1-8 are embedded into 3G-SDI output. Charon 8P is compatible with 3G-SDI (SMPTE 424M) only. 6G or 12G are not supported. In accordance with SMPTE ST 272 and SMPTE ST 299, Charon 8P can embed 8 channels of audio at 48kHz, and the de-embedding is always the first 8 channels of the SDI stream.
Network connections are fully redundant with primary and secondary connections via CAT5 copper Ethernet, or fibre via primary and secondary SFP cages. The SDI input and output is via 2x 75ohm, unbalanced BNC connectors.
Charon 8P is powered over PoE or external 12VDC for power.
Supported speeds: 2.970Gb/s, 2.970/1.001Gb/s, 1.485Gb/s, 1.485/1.001Gb/s, and 270Mb/s. Compliant to: SMPTE ST 425 (Level A and Level B), SMPTE ST 424, SMPTE 292 and SMPTE ST 259-C.
Charon 8R1 has the same functionality as Charon 8P, however it has been designed with a 1U, 19-inch rackmount form. Charon 8R1 has 2x 100-240VAC inputs by way of IEC connection. This is to provide redundancy in case of power failure.
The same functionality as Charon 8R1 however it houses two embed/de-embed modules and therefore doubling the capacity. Note, each module of the Charon 8R2 is still restricted to the first 8 channels of an SDI video stream.
