ATOMIC COPPER 29 is Glensound's flagship digital hybrid. Two digital signal processors are used; DSP1 is dedicated to the input/output process, DSP2 is dedicated to control the echo-cancellation routines. The twin DSP system results in a separation level, between the send and receive signal, better than 76dB. Three models are offered, rack-mounting single and dual hybrids and a desktop single hybrid version.
DSP1 provides a compressor limiter to manage the incoming analogue and digital audio, so as to not overload the telephone line. The automatic gain control maintains a constant caller-level to the studio, however, if there is an incoming audio signal into the hybrid from the studio, then the caller-level can be ducked, to stop the caller talking over a presenter. Incoming and outgoing audio is put through band-pass filters to remove unwanted artefacts. DSP2 provides a finely-tuned echo cancellation algorithm. A second algorithm in the echo canceller produces an internal mix-minus.
The front panel has two eight-segment bargraph PPM meters with LEDs from -20 to +12dB. Two recessed, screwdriver-adjusted, rotary controls offer level adjustment of +/- 10dB for both send and receive audio. A single illuminated push-button is used for on hook/off hook, which flashes when the line rings. A single press answers a call and transfers the audio to the main input and output. A press and hold hangs up the call. A rotary dial, protected behind a removeable cover, is used for worldwide line-impedance matching.
A bank of miniature DIP switches, behind a secure perspex panel, offers the following on/off or toggle functions: Network echo canceller; acoustic echo canceller; auto answer; auto answer (two rings or eight rings); DAA full scale 0dBm (normal) or +6dBm; tone disconnect; K-Break disconnect; call ducking; receive AGC; receive noise gate; alternate 'aux output function' (receive audio, or send+receive mix). An LED indicates power-on or a fault state, based on number of flashes. There is also a recessed reset button.
On the rear panel there are two balanced, 3-pin female XLR analogue inputs, each with a microphone/line switch. An AES digital input is provided by a 3-pin XLR, sampling-rate input range 32-192kHz at 24 bits, with internal sample-rate conversion to 48kHz. Full scale is +18dBu. Two 3-pin male XLR connectors provide analogue outputs, main and auxiliary. The AES digital output is provided by a 3-pin male XLR, this follows the sample-rate of the digital input; if there is no digital input, the sample-rate is fixed at 48kHz. Full scale is +18dBu. There are two RJ11 6P6C sockets (6P2C compatible); one for connecting the telephone line, the other for connecting the handset used for making or receiving calls, prior to the coupler taking the call over when the button on the front panel is pressed. A 15-pin D-sub connector offers full setup and system control, together with eight closing-contacts for basic functions.
Analogue inputs: -35dB/+20dB maximum, microphone/line, unity gain, 100k ohms. Analogue outputs: +18dBu maximum, 50 ohms. Line isolation: 5000V. Bandwidth: 125Hz to 3.6kHz, -3dB. Line separation: Better than 76dB, audio in to audio out, with 0dB pink noise. Power source: 100-240V AC via IEC inlet.
