SONIFEX REDBOX AUDIO/VIDEO PROCESSORS

Sonifex Redboxes were introduced in 1999 and were designed for systems integrators. They are very well received in both Broadcast and studio industries. The series of signal processors that include headphone amplifiers, mix-minus generators, silence detectors, tone generators, distribution amplifiers, audio converters and more, are built in two different extrusions, with front and rear panels screwed to the extrusion.

This range of stereo headphone amplifiers accept balanced-line signals and provide one, two or six separate outputs to drive professional headphones.

All models are housed in red-anodised aluminium cases with apertures for fixing screws, they can be attached to any flat surface, or rack-mounted from the front with the standard front panels, or in reverse, with the rear panel facing out of the rack, using accessory panels.

RB-HD1 - Headphone Amplifier, One Output

A rack-mounting stereo headphone amplifier for driving up to two pairs (in parallel) of professional stereo headphones from a single stereo or mono input. An additional mono input (for example, talkback) can be mixed into the main headphone feed. The level of the headphone outputs may be controlled by local or remote controls and the mono input can be switched on and off remotely.

The front panel has a power LED, a 6.35mm stereo headphone socket, and a volume control. This controls the level of the signal sent to both headphone sockets.

The main stereo input is from electronically balanced XLR-3 connectors on the rear panel, which can be wired un-balanced. Mono or stereo operation may be selected by an adjacent switch. The mono input is also an XLR, and has a screwdriver-operated local level control. A 6.35mm, A-gauge, stereo socket provides the second headphone outlet. It is connected in parallel with the connector on the front. A 9-pin D-sub connector provides access to the remote control ports; a switch selects local or remote operation. Power is connected to an IEC inlet. The red-anodised case has apertures for fixing screws to mount the unit to a flat surface, such as the underside of studio furniture.

Main inputs: +28dBu maximum, 20 kohms, balanced. Mono input: 20kohms, balanced. Output: 150mW into 32 to 600 ohm headphones. Volume control: -80dB to +11dB gain. Power source: 110-120V or 220-240V AC, 9W maximum. Dimensions: 1U, 108mm deep. Weight: 1.6kg.

Included accessories: Handbook, AC power cordset with plug.
Optional accessories: The RB-RK2 (1U) rear-panel kit allows the device to be rack-mounted in reverse. The RB-FR2 front-panel kit allows the device to be used without rack-mounting ears.

RB-HD2 - Headphone Amplifier, Two Separate Outputs

A rack-mounting stereo headphone amplifier for driving two pairs of professional stereo headphones from a single stereo or mono input.

The front panel has a power LED and two 6.35mm stereo A gauge headphone sockets each with a volume control. Each socket is driven by a separate amplifier.

The rear panel has a pair of electronically balanced XLR-3 input connectors, which can be wired un-balanced. Mono (fed by left channel XLR) or stereo operation may be selected by an adjacent switch; each has a level trimmer. Power is connected to an IEC inlet, with adjacent fuse and voltage selection switch.

Included accessories: Handbook, AC power cordset with plug.
Optional accessories: The RB-RK2 (1U) rear-panel kit allows the device to be rack-mounted in reverse. The RB-FR3 front-panel kit allows the device to be used without rack-mounting ears.

RB-HD6 - Headphone Distribution Amplifier, Six Separate Outputs

A rack-mounting stereo headphone amplifier with two main inputs, the RB-HD6 distributes stereo audio to up to six headphone outlets, each with its own volume control. Alternatively, the unit can be used as six separate stereo headphone-amplifiers, by using the override inputs associated with each outlet. A typical application might be to provide common headphone feeds for guests around a table in a radio studio, with a separately derived feed, perhaps including talk-back, for the presenter.

The front panel has six 3-pole, 6.35mm, A-gauge jack outlet each with an individual volume control offering a range of -60dB to +18dB gain. A master gain-control provides +\-10dB gain. This may be disabled internally.

On the rear are the two main electronically balanced inputs, using XLR-3F connectors, and a input selection switch which allows summing of the two inputs to provide a mono feed from a stereo input or to feed a mono input to both channels of the system.
Six 3-pole, 6.35mm, A-gauge jacks provide unbalanced ports to inject a separate override programme feed. Note that the master gain-control will not affect the level of channels using an override input. Alternatively these sockets can be individually configured using internal jumpers to provide a parallel output of the front headphone socket. The power connection is an IEC inlet, with fuse and voltage selection switch.

Main inputs: +28dBu maximum, 20kohms (main). Override inputs: +3dBu for full volume at +18dB gain, 10kohms. Outputs: 150mW into 32-600 ohm headphones. Power source: 110-120V or 220-240V AC 9W maximum. Dimensions: 1U rack-mounting, 108mm deep. Weight: 1.4kg.

Included accessories: Handbook, AC power cordset with plug.
Optional accessories: The RB-RK3 (1U) rear-panel kit allows the device to be rack-mounted in reverse.

RB-DHD6 - Digital Headphone Amplifier, Six Outputs

Sonifex RB-DHD6 is a 1U rackmounting unit which receives a digital input signal, as either AES/EBU or S/PDIF and converts it to 6 individually buffered analogue headphone outputs, each with their own jack plug and volume control. The input connectors consist of a single balanced XLR-3 for the AES/EBU input and a single unbalanced phono connector for the S/PDIF input. The D/A converter will accept digital sample rates from 32kHz up to 96kHz and up to 24-bit digital signals. A rear panel button is used to select either the AES/EBU, or S/PDIF, input and output de-emphasis can be selected by a DIP switch. A front panel LED indicator flashes when a valid digital signal is not present.

Can be used with the RB-RK3 (1U) rear-panel kit to reverse mount the unit in a 19" rack.

Output Level: Drives 150mW into 32 to 600 ohm headphones. Maximum Output Level: +12dBu unbalanced. Dynamic Range: >100dB. Power source: 110-120V or 220-240V AC 10W maximum, switchable, fused, IEC Inlet, lead supplied, UK 13A plug. Dimensions: 1U, 108mm deep. Weight: 1.6kg
