Normal AES-3 equipment is capable of transmission over 100 metres of twisted-pair cable; this can be extended to 200 metres using specially equalised types. The LAB-1 recovers low-level AES-3 signals from long cables and extends this range to 500 metres for a standard transmitter.
LAB-1
The AES-3 input is passed through an RF filter to a wide-band linear amplifier and then equalised. The signal level is displayed on four LEDs, giving an indication of the received carrier strength, and is then passed to a high-speed comparator and the transformer-balanced output stage. The output signal is monitored by an internal AES-3 receiver; a bi-colour LED indicates whether the signal is suitable for use.
The AES-3 input and output are XLR-3F and XLR-3M connectors respectively. Power is applied through a 2.5mm coaxial connector.
Sample rates from 24kHz to 200kHz are supported and a minimum input of 50mV peak to peak is required. Carrier level detection: 100mV, 300mV, 1V, 3V peak to peak. AES-3 input: Impedance 110 ohms, minimum level 200mV peak to peak. AES-3 output: Impedance 110ohms, 3V peak to peak loaded, jitter better than 20nS. Power source: 8-30V DC, recommended 12-24V, 80mA at 12V. 2.5mm barrel, centre positive. Dimensions: 94 x 52 x 108 (w x h x d) mm. Weight:250g.
