SONY WIRELESS SYSTEMS - DWX Digital Series

Sony DWX wireless radiomic systems include Series 2 and Series 3 products, with the latter being backwards compatible. They have been designed for use in broadcast TV studios, ENG, and live event sectors. The DWX series UHF digital system uses a ‘complete digital workflow’ from preamp to AES/EBU output and provides a full 24-bit digital signal from transmitter input to receiver output by using 96kHz A/D and D/A convertors.

All DWX transmitters and receivers are compatible with Sony’s Wireless Studio software when running on a compatible computer. This allows the user to remotely operate transmitters and receivers from a connected computer within the same network when the receiver(s) is connected. This remote control can be achieved using the antenna on the back of the receiver, with no extra hardware required, or via the RMU-01. By using the optional RMU-01 the user can control of up to 88 transmitters with one unit.

The DWX series transmitters and receivers have three codec modes to best suit the application. Depending upon the models used these modes offer differing levels of latency for either higher quality, more reliability or compatibility.

The frequencies that Sony wireless systems operate on can also be identified by the following TV Channels:

470.025 - 542.000MHz TV Ch.21-29
566.025 - 630.000MHz TV Ch.33-40
638.025 - 694.000MHz TV Ch.42-50
470.025 - 614.000MHz TV Ch.21-38
566.025 - 714.000MHz TV Ch.33-51

Usage Note: Licensing and legal use information for radiomic equipment in this product group is applicable to the UK only. Customers should check with the relevant regulatory body for the territory the equipment is to be used in prior to purchase to ensure appropriate legal usage and local environmental restrictions.

Receivers

DWR-R03D Fixed, 1U receiver with Dante

This third generation 19-inch rackmount receiver shares much of the functionality of the DWR-R02DN, however notably it is Dante compatible, giving the user the ability to network to a host of Dante compatible audio equipment. The UHF wideband range of this receiver covers 470-714MHz and is adjustable in 25kHz steps. When used with Wireless Studio version 5.2 or newer, and running firmware version 1.20 or newer, the DWR-R03D can continually scan for interference and automatically assign the best frequencies without noticeable dropout.

The front facing panel of the DWR-R03D has all user controllers including a rotary/push to enter control, ‘ESC’ (escape) button, and RX, TX, Remote buttons for each of the two channels. Each of the two OLED screens, one for each channel, shows transmitter battery status, channel frequency, name, RF and AF levels along with all menu content. A recessed and latching power switch is located to the left hand side, and a 6.35mm jack headphone output along with volume control are located to the right side. Each channel also has a ‘monitor’ button which is linked to the headphone output. The rear facing panel has all other I/O connectivity including two balanced 3-pin XLR analogue outputs, two 3-pin XLR 110ohm sub outputs in analogue/digital format, digital output on 75ohm BNC-R connection, word clock I/O on 75ohm BNC – syncing to external word clock of 32kHz to 96kHz; antenna I/O for each channel on 50ohm BNC-R, and Dante primary and secondary connections on RJ45. Power is via 100-240V AC IEC connector, and 6A AC output power is on second IEC connector.

Dimensions (W x H x D): 482 x 44 x 335mm. Weight: 3.9kg.

DWR-S03D Slot-in receiver

Available in two options, with 15-pin Sony Slot adapter or with 25-pin UniSlot adapter, this two channel slot-in receiver has been designed to slot directly into compatible video camera and camcorders, or mount to a video camera via the DWA-01D or DWA-F01D adapter. It is compatible with all DWX series transmitters and can be powered using 6V to 18V DC. An OLED screen displays current settings and RF/AF reception values. Four codec modes can be used with MODE1 being compatible with first generation DWX-series devices; MODE2 which prioritises short latency and high quality audio and stability; MODE3 which gives additional signal processing to supress noise; and MODE4 which prioritises audio quality.

Transmitters

DWT-B03R Micro bodypack transmitter

This third generation DWX bodypack transmitter has been designed for use in theatres, broadcast, and studio based TV production, where lightweight and compact devices are preferred. The magnesium manufactured casing is rain, sweat and spray proof to IPX4/IPX5 ratings. When used with the DWR-R03D, this transmitter has a 148MHz wideband spectrum that is split into two segments; (Low) 470.025MHz to 614MHz, and (High) 566.025MHz to 714MHz. Both low and high bands have step increments of 25kHz.

With dimensions of 53 x 60 x 17mm the DWT-B03R is 27% smaller than the DWT-B01N beltpack transmitter. Power is via a single rechargeable Sony NP-BX1 lithium-ion battery, which gives up to 7-hours operation. The battery can be charged directly or remaining inside the DWT-B03R with the BC-DWX1 dual charger.
