Designed for use in live on-air broadcast situations, these translator's boxes provide the features and functionality required by a translator to aid the hearing of a pre-translated source, and provide an interpreted output of high audio quality.
Glensound Charles is a single user interpreter box designed to connect across Dante audio networks. The interpreter is able to connect their headphone or headset directly, monitor a floor input, and have an additional two inputs for interpretation. There are two independent outputs for the routing of the users interpreted audio. Charles has been designed with multiple redundancy capabilities including 4 sources of power, and fully redundant network connections for both copper and fibre circuits. Audio features include a compressor limiter circuit and automatic level ducking that allows the user to include the pre translated speech when the translator is not talking or microphone is disabled.
The front facing panel has a balanced 3-pin XLR connection for microphone input, and both 6.35mm and 3.5mm stereo headphone connections. Separate microphone and headphones/earphones can be used, or alternatively a broadcast headset can be connected providing it has both 3-pin XLR and 6.35mm terminations. A goose neck microphone can also be used via a separate 3-pin XLR input on the top panel. The top facing panel also houses control features including high and low equalisation controls for the headphones; a master headphone volume controller; and microphone on/off button with associated VDU. Channels A and B have independent rotary listen level control, talk button, and listen button.
The rear facing panel houses the Dante connectivity by way of dual RJ45 network connections, primary and secondary SFP network interface, and USB connection for firmware updates. Phantom power switching is also positioned on this panel, along with mic/line switch, input gain up switching with LED indications of higher, lineup, and lower; and LEDs to illustrate the power status from each of the four power options. The unit is powered by using an external DC or internal AC mains connection, or via PoE power provided by a connected network.
